Type of work: Concept Design

This concept served as the foundational look for the sequence in which Moiraine expands her channeling abilities through the Sakarnen. The Sakarnen is a powerful sa'angreal known for its significant role in the Wheel of Time's lore. The goal was to convey a sense of awe and raw power, ensuring that the moment would stand out both narratively and visually.

With my supervisor, Andy Scrase, we decided to design a series of radial weaves that would emanate outward from Moiraine’s core, echoing the way magical energy radiates from a source. Each weave was layered with subtle variations in thickness and opacity, allowing the effect to feel both intricate and dynamic as the camera tracked her movements. I experimented with several compositional arrangements—concentric circles, spiraling arcs, and overlapping filaments—before settling on a succession of interlocking arcs that suggested both expansion and containment, mirroring the controlled yet overwhelming nature of her newfound power.

Choosing the right color palette was critical. The desert landscape surrounding the scene is dominated by warm, earthy tones—sands, ochres, and muted reds—that could easily drown out any magical effect if the hues were too similar. I therefore opted for a cool, luminous cyan‑blue that cuts sharply against the background, creating a stark, almost ethereal contrast. This hue not only highlights the magical energy but also evokes a sense of otherworldliness, reinforcing the idea that Moiraine is tapping into forces beyond ordinary comprehension.

The final rendered sequence delivers exactly the impact I envisioned: a grand, powerful display that feels both majestic and intimate.
